Что проще?» - опешили товарищи. «Проще и проще», - ответил Хрущев. Возмущаться товарищи не рискнули.
По закону вопрос надо было вынести на открытое обсуждение Верховного Совета РСФСР, выяснить на референдумах мнение жителей обеих республик и отдельно - жителей Крыма. А после на референдуме же - всех граждан СССР.
Но разводить «демократию» не стали. Собрали лишь Президиум Верховного Совета РСФСР. На нем с речами (сочиненными, по некоторым данным, «серым кардиналом» Сусловым) выступили Коротченко, Рашидов, Куусинен. Из 27 членов президиума присутствовали 13 - даже кворума не было. Остальные прислали телеграммы, что по разным причинам присутствовать не смогут.
Почему он это сделал?
Некоторые историки видят причину в том, что Хрущев, придя к власти после смерти Сталина, начал готовить почву для развенчания культа личности и репрессий. Но сам Хрущев, будучи первым секретарем ЦК украинской компартии в 1938 - 1947 гг., принимал активное участие в репрессиях на Украине. И, чтобы в какой-то мере искупить вину перед Украиной и заручиться поддержкой украинской верхушки, подарил Крым Украине.
